Transferring points beats credit card portals

The guest argued that redeeming credit card points directly through issuer portals caps their value, whereas transferring them to airline and hotel loyalty programs unlocks significantly higher valuations.

The argument

According to the guest, issuer portals or cash-back options typically limit point values to 1 to 1.5 cents per point. Transferring those same points to partners like Hyatt or international airlines can expand their value to 2 to 10 cents per point.

The thesis, stress-tested
✓ What validates it
  • Successful redemption of transferred points at a valuation exceeding 2 cents per point compared to the cash price of the booking
▸ Risks discussed
  • Loyalty programs can devalue their points or award charts without prior notice
  • Point transfers from credit card issuers to loyalty programs are typically irreversible
Hear it yourself
"I think it's an absolutely valid part of your overall credit card and points strategy because it's simply the easiest way to earn more points for a given amount of spend than any other method. I'm not saying, no. Don't ever get new cards. I think they absolutely have a use, but it has never been, at least for me, practical or reasonable to take the approach of, let me just always open up a brand new card and put all my spend on that. Now this is gonna vary based on what your average expenses are. If someone's average expenses are 1 to $2,000 a month, that could actually be a very reasonable approach."
