AI micropayments face massive blockchain scaling bottleneck

The guest argued that monetizing AI agent web traffic via microtransactions requires stablecoin and blockchain infrastructure capable of scaling to tens of millions of transactions per second, far exceeding current crypto capabilities.

The argument

Cloudflare's CEO noted that while 1% to 10% of their 500 million requests per second could be monetized via fractions of a cent, no existing blockchain or stablecoin layer can handle the required volume of 5 million to 50 million transactions per second. Cloudflare is actively collaborating with Coinbase and others on the HTTP 402 payment standard but warns that the underlying blockchain plumbing is not yet ready for internet-scale deployment.

The thesis, stress-tested
✓ What validates it
  • Launch of a blockchain or L2 network demonstrating stable throughput of over 5 million transactions per second
  • Widespread adoption of the Linux Foundation's HTTP 402 standard by major AI labs like OpenAI or Anthropic
▸ Risks discussed
  • No existing blockchain can currently scale to the required millions of transactions per second
  • High transaction fees on traditional payment rails like Visa make them non-viable for microtransactions
  • Risk of system failure if turned on overnight without adequate scaling capacity
Hear it yourself
"new things that are happening is actually is actually growing again and growing at rates that look like what the early two thousands growth rates of the Internet, look like. So I actually think that's kind of optimistic that there's more things that are being created that are out there and are and are are coming online. Bankless Station, very excited to introduce you to Matthew Prince. He's the cofounder and CEO of Cloud Flare. That's a $70,000,000,000 company that sits between the Internet and roughly, 20% of the world's websites run on top of Cloud Flare."
