AI agents to drive exponential token demand

The discussion highlighted how the shift toward autonomous AI agents will exponentially increase token consumption, even as unit inference costs decline.

The argument

The host cited a Goldman Sachs estimate that AI agents will increase token consumption by 24x over five years. The guest agreed, noting that lower inference costs will trigger Jevons' paradox, leading enterprises to deploy background agents across vastly more surface area.

The thesis, stress-tested
✓ What validates it
  • Hyperscaler capital expenditure continuing to rise to support compute capacity
  • Widespread enterprise deployment of multi-agent background workflows
▸ Risks discussed
  • Inference cost declines outpacing volume growth in the short term
  • Technical bottlenecks in agent reliability delaying deployment
Hear it yourself
"If you're trying to serve clinicians, doctors, there's about a million doctors in the country. Maybe 800,000 of them are actually practicing. The vast majority of them are concentrated in large care delivery systems. They're called integrated delivery networks or payer providers. They're they also have, like, payer arms, insurance arms, or their academic medical centers, like the Emorys, the Yales, the UCSFs, and beyond. And so when they're concentrated there, you have to think about getting there as fast as you possibly can. Because, obviously, you've got huge ambition."
