Bespoke software boom increases developer demand

The thesis argues that AI code automation is driving an explosion in code volume and complexity, ultimately increasing—rather than decreasing—the demand for software engineers to manage and deploy bespoke software across the economy.

The argument

David Sacks argued that despite near-complete automation of code writing, software developer job postings are up 15% year-over-year. He explained that as code generation becomes exponentially cheaper, non-tech firms are hiring developers to deploy custom software for the first time, creating a net-positive productivity and employment cycle.

The thesis, stress-tested
✓ What validates it
  • Continued year-over-year growth in software developer job postings
  • Further exponential increases in GitHub code commits
▸ Risks discussed
  • AI models becoming fully autonomous to the point of needing zero human oversight
  • Macroeconomic slowdown reducing IT and custom software budgets

"Alright, folks. And, good for you, PG. Yeah. It's great. I bought two two other so I did a TED Talk, which will come out soon that's related to the book. I, there's a professor in Miami that's built a course around the book, which I'm excited about. And he's he's he's doing it in a kind of an open source way so that other people can borrow that as well. And so if there's anyone out there, I'd love to, help them do that. What's your take on all of this doomerism? Like, if you're a young person and you're in college or"
