Perfect protocol-level privacy is a false promise

Perfect privacy cannot coexist with auditability on a blockchain's base layer, and maintaining an auditable supply cap is far more critical to Bitcoin's value proposition than transaction anonymity.

The argument

The guest argued that privacy is better suited as an application-layer feature rather than a protocol-level one. He pointed to historical inflation bugs in privacy-focused coins like Zcash to validate the risk of sacrificing base-layer auditability.

The thesis, stress-tested
✓ What validates it
  • Discovery of further inflation or consensus bugs in zero-knowledge or privacy-centric protocols
▸ Risks discussed
  • Base-layer transparency allows chain-analysis firms and governments to trace user wealth when assets are converted to physical property
Hear it yourself
"Like, I think that's a great value to have. But you cannot have perfect privacy on an L1 and auditability. And Bitcoin's core value prop is around the 21 million hard cap being a credible monetary policy."
