Hub-and-spoke DLE lowers lithium CapEx

The guests argued that a hub-and-spoke development model using direct lithium extraction (DLE) allows for smaller, lower-CapEx initial production facilities that can scale using cash flow, avoiding the multi-billion dollar hurdles of traditional mega-projects.

The argument

EMP Metals is constructing a demonstration plant (Project Aurora) in Saskatchewan to test innovative process flow sheets aimed at improving recovery rates and cost structures. The guests argued this approach provides a faster path to commercial production (targeted for late 2028/early 2029) with reduced dilution and lower capital requirements.

The thesis, stress-tested
✓ What validates it
  • Successful commissioning and operation of the Project Aurora demonstration plant in late Q3/early Q4 2026
  • Securing non-dilutive government funding or offtake financing for Phase 2 by the end of 2026
  • Final investment decision (FID) on the first commercial facility by late 2026
▸ Risks discussed
  • Execution risks associated with scaling new DLE technology to commercial levels
  • Financing risks for Phase 2 commercial scale-up
  • Regulatory and permitting delays in Saskatchewan
Hear it yourself
"as we move to future production scale up. So provincial grants, again, we've been approved by both the BC government and the low and the Saskatchewan government, as well as some federal grants through Natural Resource Canada and NextGen Manufacturing that are supporting our demonstration facility that's currently in construction. And then, again, other funder opportunities do continue to exist for next phase of our company when we start to look at commercial scaling opportunities as well. Well, I think that's a great segue into discussing how E and P Metals fits into the lithium market picture."
